The North Carolina Tar Heels were tagged with their first loss of the season over the weekend in tournament action out in Las Vegas, but they're going to have to shake off that result quickly as they take on a pair of tough schools on the college basketball betting board this week.

Tar Heels take first loss of season

After winning their first five games of the season the Tar Heels were finally taken down on Saturday night, falling 90-80 to UNLV in a big upset in the championship game at the Las Vegas Invitational tournament.  Harrison Barnes and P.J. Hairston each scored 15 points for North Carolina in that defeat against the Rebels, while Dexter Strickland was good for 12 points on the night. John Henson tossed in 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the day's loss for North Carolina.

That put the Tar Heels at 5-1 straight up and 3-2 against the college basketball odds through six games on the season; their five-game winning streak to start the year came against Michigan State, N.C. Asheville, Mississippi Valley State, Tennessee State, and South Carolina. The competition gets tougher this week, though, as they take on both Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Badgers hit the road for Chapel Hill

North Carolina will first play host to Wisconsin this week, with the Badgers entering Wednesday night's matchup at 6-0 straight up and 3-0 against the college basketball odds at the Bodog Sportsbook. Wisconsin played a pair of games at the Chicago Invitational Challenge over the weekend, beating Bradley 66-43 and then topping BYU 73-56 to earn the tourney victory.

Ben Brust scored a team-high 21 points for Wisconsin in their win over BYU in the title game on Saturday, with Jordan Taylor scoring 18 points on the day. Mike Bruesewitz and Jared Berggren each had 13 points in that contest for the Badgers, who lost 88-82 to the Tar Heels in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament when those schools last took to the hardwood back in 2005.

Tar Heels face Wildcats in Kentucky

After taking on Wisconsin the Tar Heels will travel to Lexington for a showdown against Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats enter the week at 6-0 straight up and 3-2 against the college basketball betting lines after cruising through their first two weeks of action; Kentucky faces St. John's on Thursday night before taking on the Tar Heels on Saturday.

Kentucky kept their winning streak alive over the weekend with an easy 87-63 win over Portland. Terrence Jones and Darius Miller had 19 points apiece for the Wildcats in that contest, with Anthony Davis adding 13 points while grabbing 12 rebounds in the win. The Wildcats faced the Tar Heels in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season, winning by a score of 76-69. North Carolina, however, is 3-2 straight up against Kentucky over the last five meetings between the two schools, managing to cover the spread in four of those five contests.
